ABSTRACT
The invention relates to a solar power based air purifier, comprising an air filter mounted on a the purifier; a catalytic convertor affixed inside for allowing chemical reactions to take place and reduce toxicity of gases to obtain purified air; a rotator compressor unit associated to catalytic converter; and a carbon coating unit on the lower portion of the purifier. The control method for purifying air through purifier, comprises the steps of, allowing polluting air containing toxic gases as an input to pass through air inlet/filter by creating a suction mechanism; converting the air having highly toxic gases into air containing less toxic gasses through a reaction in catalytic converter for a predefined amount of time; and passing the resultant air obtained through activated carbon filter unit to obtain purified air free of harmful pollutants.

CLAIMS

1. A solar power based air purifier, comprising ; - an air filter mounted on a first portion of said purifier; - a catalytic convertor affixed inside said purifier for allowing chemical reactions to take place and reduce toxicity of gases to obtain purified air; - a rotator compressor unit adjacent to said filter and associated to said catalytic converter; and - a carbon coating unit on the second portion of said purifier. - a pollution monitoring circuit. - a foldable solar panel.

2. The pollution monitoring circuit as claimed in claim 1, helps to monitor the purification rate of the air purifier, atmospheric pollution as well as the efficiency.

The pollution monitoring circuit as claimed in claim 1 further comprises five different sensors which are placed at inlet and outlet, such as Carbon Dioxide sensor, Carbon Monoxide sensor, Nitrous Oxide sensor, Moisture sensor, Air Pressure sensor and their readings are displayed on a GLCD mounted outside the air purifier.

The catalytic converter of air purifier as claimed in claim 1 shows following reactions: reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen: 2NOx → xO2 + N2 , oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide: 2CO + O2 → 2CO2 , oxidation of unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) to carbon dioxide and water: CxH2x+2 + [(3x+1)/2]O2 → xCO2 + (x+1)H2O.

5. The catalytic converter of air purifier as claimed in claim 1 further comprises silica gel, activated carbon and zeolites. 10.

The control method for purifying air through said purifier as claimed in Claim 1, comprises the steps of : - allowing polluting air containing toxic gases as an input to pass through said air inlet/filter by creating a suction mechanism; - converting the air having highly toxic gases into air containing less toxic gasses through a reaction in said catalytic converter for a predefined amount of time; and - passing the resultant air obtained through said activated carbon filter unit to obtain purified air free of harmful pollutants.

7. The suction mechanism of claim 2 further comprises two fans, one at inlet and one at outlet to pass the air through air purifier.

8. A solar powered based air purifier wherein the circuitry of air purifier is operated using AVR microcontroller.

AIR PURIFIER BASED ON CATALYTIC CONVERTOR AND A CONTROL METHOD

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates generally to air purifiers. More particularly, the invention relates to a solar power based air purifiers using a catalytic convertor and a control method thereof to convert the highly toxic gases into less toxic gases, thereby reducing pollution in the environment.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

An air purifier is an apparatus for removing dust, bacteria, and other contaminants from air, and for supplying purified clean air. Generally, a dust collector for collecting dust from air and/or a deodorization filter for removing odor from air are installed in the air purifier.

A conventional air purifier consists of an air suction part for sucking air, a filter part for purifying air and a blowing part for discharging the purified air. The range of air that an air purifier can suck is limited to a space formed around an air purifier. The conventional air purifier generally used at home and an office is basically designed to purify air only at a fixed position. When the size of an air purifier is small, it is preferably fixed at a rack or a desk, and when the size of an air purifier is large, it is preferably positioned on a wall surface or on a ceiling.

In today’s world vehicular emission has increased a lot, and various studies done on Delhi shows that there are about 55,00,000 petrol run two-wheelers in the National Capital, compared to 81,269 auto rickshaws and 4,700 buses that run on CNG. This 55, 00,000 contribute to about 32% in the total pollution from transport sector. Vehicular emissions are responsible for the release of Carbon Monoxide and Nitrous Oxide in large amounts. As these gasses are highly toxic

and cause some serious health issues, they need to be reduced and because they can’t just be eliminated we can convert them from very toxic to less toxic compounds.

In everyday life you will inevitably encounter various odors, harmful gases and odors even producing bacteria and viruses, seriously affecting people's health and people's work, with the improvement of people's living standards, to solve the above Ambient air pollution problems, clean air pollution problems have been imminent then, at present, the air purifier has the following disadvantages: complex structure, features a single, space, and requires an external power supply. Carbon Monoxide is a highly toxic gas which is generally formed in car engines due to scarcity of oxygen. Our body contains haemoglobin and after binding with oxygen it forms oxyhemoglobin. But Carbon is better at binding with haemoglobin due to its high affinity towards haemoglobin resulting in the formation of carboxy hemoglobin. This carboxyhemoglobin is fatal. Similarly Nitrous Oxide when comes in contact with water it forms Nitric Acid which is corrosive and results in many skin diseases.

Moreover, the prior art does not disclose any solar power based air purifier devices or apparatus and for that matter any kind of catalytic convertor based air purifier that are installed outdoor that can reduce the toxicity of the vehicular emission, moreover the toxicity of Carbon Monoxide and Nitrous Oxide.

Accordingly, it would be a significant advancement in the art to provide a solar powered air purifier, which has a uniformly high air-purifying efficiency throughout an outdoor space having a complicated structure or large dimensions, and a method for controlling the same. Said air purifier comprises of a modular housing assembly, wherein said housing assembly comprise of an air filter; a catalytic convertor; a rotator compressor unit and a carbon coating unit;

OBJECT OF THE INVENTION The principal object of the present invention is to overcome the disadvantages of

the prior art. An object of the present invention is to provide an economic solar power based air purifiers using a catalytic convertor and a control method thereof to convert the highly toxic gases into less toxic gases, thereby reducing pollution in the environment. Another object of the present invention is to provide a solar power based air purifier works on two principles, first is based on suction and the other is based on catalysis reaction. Another object of the present invention is to provide solar power based air purifier to reduce the toxicity of vehicular emission, moreover the toxicity of Carbon Monoxide and Nitrous Oxide. Another object of the present invention is to provide a solar power based air purifier that is placed at road traffic signals, where the fuel emission rate is very high. Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a solar power based air purifier, wherein a suction is created to make the air pass through a catalytic convertor where all the reactions take place.

Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a solar power based air purifier which is simple in design, profitable, efficient and reliable. The foregoing and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become readily apparent upon further review of the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention has been developed to create a a solar power based air purifiers using a catalytic convertor and a control method thereof to convert the highly toxic gases into less toxic gases, thereby reducing pollution in the environment.

According to an embodiment of the present invention, the air purifier that runs on solar power , comprises of a modular housing assembly, wherein said housing assembly comprise of ;

- an air filter mounted on the upper portion of said purifier;

- a catalytic convertor affixed inside said purifier for allowing chemical reactions to take place;

- a rotator compressor unit adjacent to said filter and associated to said catalytic converter;

- a carbon coating unit on the lower portion of said purifier.

- a foldable solar panel

According to an embodiment of the present invention , the solar power based air purifier also comprises of a pollution level indicator circuit to indicate recent variations in the pollution level in the air.

According to an embodiment of the present invention, the control method for purifying air through the solar power based air purifier, comprises the steps of :

- allowing polluting air containing toxic gases as an input to pass through the air inlet/filter by creating a suction mechanism;

- converting the air having highly toxic gases into air containing less toxic gasses through a reaction in the catalytic converter; and

- passing the resultant air obtained through the activated carbon filter unit to obtain purified air free of harmful pollutants.

According to another embodiment of the present invention, the purifier is a modular unit not a mobile unit, it is to be place and installed at areas of high pollution emission.

According to another embodiment of the present invention, the size of the purifier can be varied according to the area where it has to be placed (indoor or

outdoor).

Detailed Description Of The Invention The following description includes the preferred best mode of one embodiment of the present invention. It will be clear from this description of the invention that the invention is not limited to these illustrated embodiments but that the invention also includes a variety of modifications and embodiments thereto. Therefore the present description should be seen as illustrative and not limiting. While the invention is susceptible to various modifications and alternative constructions, it should be understood, that there is no intention to limit the invention to the specific form disclosed, but, on the contrary, the invention is to cover all modifications, alternative constructions, and equivalents falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.

Figure 1 discloses a novel design of an Air Purifier, which has approximate dimensions of 50cms x 50cms x 50cms. The Air Purifier is so designed that it is efficient, portable as well as eco-friendly. Along with purification mechanism it is also fitted with a pollution monitoring circuit which helps to monitor the atmospheric pollution as well as the efficiency or the purification rate of the air purifier. The air is made to pass through the air purifier through a suction mechanism, which is run using two fans (one at inlet and one at outlet). All the electronic components are powered using solar power. To harness the solar energy, a foldable solar panel has been fitted on the air purifier. The major pollutants that the air purifier reduces is Carbon Monoxide and Nitrous Oxide and the major purification is done in the catalytic converter. Other things fitted in the catalytic converter are silica gel, activated carbon and zeolites. In the purifier there is one inlet and one outlet and both the inlet and outlet are fitted with fans to facilitate suction. The silica gel helps in reducing the moisture from the air, hence easing the purification process and keeping the air purifier dry. Activated carbon reduces carbon content and visible impurities of air. Then the air passes through the catalytic convertor where the following reactions occur, reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen: 2NOx → xO2 + N2 , oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide: 2CO + O2 → 2CO2 , oxidation of unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) to carbon dioxide and water: CxH2x+2 + [(3x+1)/2]O2 → xCO2 + (x+1)H2O. And zeolites act as molecular sieve. The monitoring circuit comprises of pairs of five different sensors each of which is placed at inlet and the outlet. The sensors used are Carbon Dioxide sensor,

Carbon Monoxide sensor, Nitrous Oxide sensor, Moisture sensor, Air Pressure sensor. The whole circuitry is operated using AVR microcontroller. Both the fans have individual speed regulators to vary the fan speed according to maximum efficiency. All the readings from the sensors are displayed on a GLCD mounted outside the air purifier. Since the Air purifier is powered using solar power, it can be installed in any area with high pollution index. This Air Purifier finds applications at traffic signals and high pollution emitting industries.

Figure 3 shows rear view of the solar powered air purifier where a small controller is attached at the rear portion.
