ABSTRACT
The present invention relates to a head wearable electronic device worn by a user in the form of a hat for identifying obstacles and intimating said user, thereby preventing occurrence of accidents, comprising of a distance sensors, vibration sensors, microcontroller (central processing unit) , a GPS and GSM system and at least one reset button with which the user can shut down the vibration alerts by pressing or touching the button for a predefined duration and a method of operation for the same.

CLAIMS

1. An automatic head wearable electronic device, comprising: - plurality of distance sensors mounted on said device, wherein said sensors sense the obstacle and determine a predefined distance of said obstacle ; - plurality of vibration sensors associated to said distance sensors, wherein said sensors sense the jerks(fall) and further generate vibration alerts; - a microcontroller (central processing unit) for controlling and analyzing the stored information under control of a software program; - a GPS module integrated with said microcontroller, wherein said module determines the current location of said user; - a GSM module integrated with said microcontroller in close association to said GPS module, wherein said GSM module performs the function of sending the coordinates to said user to the relative of said user via a text message on a predefined number; and - at least one reset button, wherein said button is pressed in case there is no mishap after collision.

2.An automatic head wearable electronic device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said the distance sensors are selected from ultrasonic based, infrared based, laser based or any distance sensing device, the preferred one are the ultrasonic sensors.

3. An automatic head wearable electronic device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said device is wearable by said user in the form of a hat.

An automatic head wearable electronic device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said reset button the user can shut down the vibration alerts by pressing or touching said button for a predefined duration , if he/she can withstand the obstacle, indicating that he/she is safe at the particular location.

5. An automatic head wearable electronic device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said vibration alerts produced are inversely proportional to said distance between said obstacles and said user(wearer).

The method of operation of said device as claimed in Claims 1 to 5 , comprises the steps of ; - generating a echo using ultrasonic(distance) sensors and detect a predetermined obstacle to a user and further determine a predefined distance of said obstacle from said user; - producing vibration alerts and sensing jerks(fall) using vibration sensors; - controlling and analyzing stored information using a microcontroller; - determining the current location of said user using a GPS module; - sending the coordinates to said user to the relative of said user via a text message on a predefined number using GSM module; and - pressing a reset button in case there is no mishap after collision, thereby indicating said user is safe.

7. The method of operation of said device as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the fall of said user is depicted by said vibration sensor which senses a jerk (fall), if the value of the jerk is more than a threshold value that has been set, it activates the further processing of the GSM and GPS module.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention generally relates to wearable electronic devices or systems for the visually impaired population. More particularly, the invention relates to a head wearable electronic device worn by a user in the form of a hat and a method of operation for identifying obstacles and intimating said user, thereby preventing occurrence of accidents.



BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

For the visually impaired, the challenge is in performing the routine tasks, such as, mobility, way finding, interacting with the environment and people, among others. Measures, such as, teaching the visually impaired people the use of canes and guide dogs for mobility and Braille codes for communication to live independent lives, have proved successful to certain extent over the decades, but the dependency of a visually impaired person on other individuals has not been completely rooted out.

Research for designing and developing assisting devices for the visually impaired has its focus mainly on areas of navigational support, as problems related to mobility are challenging.

Blind individuals can be assisted by making use of guide dogs or seeing dogs, where they respond to the sounds made by the dogs, such as a bark or by the leading role of the dogs in walking, halting, etc., as well as navigation aspects. Deaf individuals sometimes use hearing dogs that have been trained to recognize sounds that require alerting their deaf owners and respond by physical means, thereby alerting their human companion to a situation on hand. However, the situation is different when it comes to persons who are both deaf and blind (deaf blind) who cannot fully utilize the benefit of either sound or sight/motion cues provided by such dogs that have been appropriately so trained.

Attempts to assist blind people in navigation have been introduced into the market, such attempts utilize the global positioning system (GPS). Some conventional systems use GPS system to assist an individual in navigation. Such systems can only provide navigation assistance at a macro level. However, a visually impaired person would require assistance at micro level, such as providing feedback on obstacles present in his path. However, these welcome attempts have failed indoors or in close proximity to tall buildings or structures. Further, these attempts do not provide solutions for the deaf blind.

CN 205083958 U relates to intelligent blind guiding apparatus comprising a hat, wherein the hat contains a central processing unit; an ultrasonic module for obstacle detection and a GPS module for establishing the position of the person; a vibration module. The invention comprises of similar elements but does not talk explicitly about the reset button for the wearer to stop vibrations and indicate that he/she is safe.

US 2015199918 does not explicitly talk about a GPS system to locate the blind person’s position. There is no mention of a reset button. Also, US20110226891 relates to a wearable blind guiding device comprising of a Arduino microcontroller as a central processing device; ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection and vibration modules. However it does not mention of a GPS system to locate the blind person’s position and also there is no mention of a reset button.

The existing devices which have been made to help the disabled did not have the integration of GSM and GPS feature which would help in tracing the location and hence intimating the kin in adverse case.

In view of the foregoing disadvantages and the prior arts, there is a need in the art for a head wearable electronic device worn by visually impaired individual’s and a method of operation for identifying or detecting any kind of mishap, obstacles up to a range of 400 cm which is greater than that of the already existing devices and further intimating the kin of the person, thereby avoiding the occurrence of accidents.

Said device/system comprises of distance sensors; vibration sensors; a microcontroller (central processing unit); a GSM GPRS Module; a GPS Module and a reset button.



OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

The principal object of the present invention is to overcome the disadvantages of the prior art.

An object of the present invention is to a head wearable electronic device worn by visually impaired individual serving as an early warning system to detect obstacles up to a range of 400 cm and further intimates the kin of the person, thereby reducing the number of accidents.

Another object of the present invention to provide a head wearable electronic device that can generate confidence and build a friendly environment by making individuals with auditory, speech and visual impairments aware of the surroundings, minimizing the stumbles.

Another object of the present invention to provide a head wearable electronic device that can be used as an automatic early warning system for the blind/ deaf people.

Yet another object of the present invention to provide a head wearable electronic device , wherein the GSM and GPS modules are integrated with the microcontroller that helps in tracing the current location and hence intimating the kin in adverse case.

Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a head wearable electronic device that is lightweight, easy to wear, compact, affordable and portable in nature.

The foregoing and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become readily apparent upon further review of the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a head wearable electronic device worn by visually impaired individual in the form of a smart hat and a method of operation for identifying obstacles or hindrances, thereby preventing the occurrence of accidents.

According to an embodiment of the present invention, the head wearable electronic device, comprises of:

- a plurality of distance sensors mounted on said device to sense the obstacle to a user and determine a predefined distance of said obstacle ;

- vibration sensors associated to said distance sensors for sensing the jerks and further generating vibration alerts;

- a microcontroller (central processing unit) for controlling and analyzing the stored information under control of a software program;

- a GPS module integrated with said microcontroller for determining the current location of said user;

- a GSM module also integrated with said microcontroller and further associated with said GPS module, wherein said GSM module performs the function of sending the coordinates to said user to the relative of said user via a text message on a predefined number; and

- at least one reset button, wherein said button is pressed in case there is no mishap after collision

According to another embodiment of the present invention, the distance sensors are selected from ultrasonic based, infrared based, laser based or any distance sensing device, the preferred one are the ultrasonic sensors.

According to another embodiment of the present invention, with the help of the reset button the user can shut down the vibration alerts by pressing or touching the button for a predefined duration , if he/she can withstand the obstacle, indicating that he/she is safe at the particular location.

According to another embodiment of the present invention, the vibration alerts produced are inversely proportional to the distance between the obstacles and wearer.

According to an embodiment of the present invention, the method of operation of the device, comprises the steps of ;

- generating a echo using ultrasonic(distance) sensors and detect a predetermined obstacle to a user and further determine a predefined distance of said obstacle from said user;

- producing vibration alerts and sensing jerks(fall) using vibration sensors;

- controlling and analyzing stored information using a microcontroller;

- determining the current location of said user using a GPS module;

- sending the coordinates of said location to the relative of said user via a text message on a predefined number using GSM module; and

- pressing a reset button in case there is no mishap after collision, thereby indicating said user is safe.

According to another embodiment of the present invention , the fall of a person is depicted by the vibration sensor which senses a jerk (fall), if the value of the jerk is more than a threshold value that has been set, it activates the further processing of the GSM and GPS modules.

While the invention has been described and shown with particular reference to the preferred embodiment, it will be apparent that variations might be possible that would fall within the scope of the present invention.

The past few decades have witnessed remarkable development in every sphere of life and technology. New inventions are coming up with every passing day and benefit the man in one way or the other. Not everyone on the earth is blessed with a perfect life; perhaps many people are physically challenged. Statistics show that 39 million people are visually impaired, 70 million are deaf. Smart Head Wearable Device is a boon which can help these people. It can help in averting the accidents that might likely happen with early warning signals (in the form of vibrations). The device basically serves as an early warning system warning about the obstacles on the way, and still if the collision happens, it provides a timely and automated assistance.GPS and GSM have further facilitated the operation of device by sending person’s location coordinates through an SMS and making calls on the number(s) of the kin.

The invention relates to a head wearable electronic device worn by visually impaired individual in the form of a smart hat and a process for the same for identifying obstacles or hindrances, thereby preventing the occurrence of accidents.

According to Figure 1 , the head wearable electronic device, comprises of a plurality of distance sensors mounted on device to sense the obstacle to a user and determine a predefined distance of obstacle ;vibration sensors associated to distance sensors for sensing the jerks and further generating vibration alerts; a microcontroller (central processing unit) for controlling and analyzing the stored information under control of a software program; a GPS module integrated with microcontroller for determining the current location of user; a GSM module also integrated with microcontroller and further associated with GPS module, wherein GSM module performs the function of sending the coordinates to user to the relative of user via a text message on a predefined number; and at least one reset button, wherein button is pressed in case there is no mishap after collision.

The distance sensors are selected from ultrasonic based, infrared based, laser based or any distance sensing device, the preferred one are the ultrasonic sensors.

Arduino Nano microcontroller is distinguished from the others due to its compact size and fast processing speed. It uses the microcontroller ATmega 328. It has the following features, fast clock speed and processing speeds, compact in size, 32k bytes of flash memory and cost effectiveness

Ultrasonic sensors are SONAR based sensors which are used to determine objects at a certain distance. In the device, they are used to sense the obstacles which might come in the path of the blind and deaf, and determining the distance of the obstacle from the person. Some of the features are high ranging from 2cm to 400 cm of distance, ranging accuracy of about 3mm a 30o of effective measurement angle.

GPS GPRS Module which is responsible for sending an SMS and make calls. It can accept SIM card of any GSM operator and act like a mobile phone with a unique phone number. Having a GPRS module enables the SIM 900A to be connected to the internet and facilitate data transfer. Some of the features are enables calling and SMS features, GPRS makes the use of internet possible, connected to any microcontroller using MAX232.

GPS Module is a device which accurately calculates the location through GPS satellites. It has been integrated with the device, such that the current location coordinates can be sent to the kin via an SMS through the GSM GPRS module. The prominent features are that it is a highly compact module set up and light weight, accurate and gives precise location coordinates.

The micro vibration module is used to produce light vibrations similar to those like the cell phones. The need to use the vibration module is the output that is in the form of vibrations is varied with the distance. The features are compact in size, various vibration patterns could be implemented.

Vibration Sensor senses the intensified vibrations or jerks which might be produced to some abrupt or sudden actions. The aim of putting this sensor is that, if something strikes the person, or he falls down due to some reason, or the cap does, the vibrations produced by this action will generate an automated call to the kin, as well as the SMS with the coordinates.

Reset button is a physical button which when pressed will stop the calls which have been generated. It would mean that the blind or deaf person is fine, because he has pressed the reset button.

With the help of the reset button the user can shut down the vibration alerts by pressing or touching the button for a predefined duration , if he/she can withstand the obstacle, indicating that he/she is safe at the particular location.

The vibration alerts produced are inversely proportional to the distance between the obstacles and wearer or the user.

The method of operation functioning of the device, comprises the steps of generating a echo using ultrasonic(distance) sensors and detect a predetermined obstacle to a user and further determine a predefined distance of obstacle from user; producing vibration alerts and sensing jerks(fall) using vibration sensors; controlling and analyzing stored information using a microcontroller; determining the current location of user using a GPS module; sending the coordinates of location of the user to the relative of user via a text message on a predefined number using GSM module, and pressing a reset button in case there is no mishap after collision, thereby indicating that user is safe.

Thus, this written description uses examples to disclose the invention, including the best mode, and also to enable any person skilled in the art to practice the invention, including making and using any devices or systems and performing any incorporated methods.
